Editing Style: Choosing Your Favorite

When you are looking for a photographer for an important event or milestone in your life it is important to think about what style of image you are looking for. What do I mean by image style? Image style refers to the way the final photo looks when you receive it from your photographer. You may have noticed scrolling through Pinterest or Facebook that images look different from photographer to photographer. That’s because each photographer has their own unique editing style that determines the look or “style” of their final images. There are many different editing styles. Two of the most popular editing styles are bright and airy and dark and moody. In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at these two styles and discuss their unique characteristics.

Bright and Airy Style

The bright and airy style is characterized by light, pastel colors, and soft, dreamy lighting. This style is often used in wedding photography, lifestyle photography, and portrait photography. It is a popular style because it creates a soft, romantic, and dreamy feel to the photo.

Some common techniques used to create a bright and airy photo include:

  1. Adjusting the exposure and brightness levels to create a light, bright image.
  2. Using soft pastel colors and tones to create a dreamy and romantic feel.
  3. Enhancing the whites and highlights to create a soft, airy look.
  4. Softening the edges of the photo to create a more dreamy and ethereal look.

Dark and Moody Style

The dark and moody style is characterized by deep, rich colors, and shadows. This style is often used in fashion photography, landscape photography, and still life photography. It is a popular style because it creates a dramatic, moody, and atmospheric feel to the photo.

Some common techniques used to create a dark and moody photo include:

  1. Adjusting the exposure and contrast levels to create a dark and moody feel.
  2. Using deep, rich colors and tones to create an atmospheric and moody feel.
  3. Enhancing the shadows and blacks to create a dramatic and moody look.
  4. Creating a vignette effect to darken the edges of the photo and draw the viewer’s attention to the center of the image.

Which Style to Choose?

Both bright and airy and dark and moody styles have their unique characteristics and can create stunning results. The style you choose to use will depend on the mood and feeling you want to convey in your photo and what is being photographed. If you’re looking to create a soft, dreamy, and romantic feel, then the bright and airy style may be the way to go. However, if you want to create a dramatic, moody, and atmospheric feel, then the dark and moody style may be more suitable for your final images.

Choosing the Right Photographer

When choosing a photographer it is important to know what editing style you prefer. Once you know what you want your final images to look like I recommend looking at different photographers portfolios on their websites, Facebook, and Instagram pages. You will find that most photographers stick to one style of editing. Once you have found a photographer whose work matches your vision reach out to them about scheduling a session.
